glTF.gltf
glTF (JSON)
glTF 2.0 in its JSON form. The .gltf file is a readable text document that describes the scene and references an external .bin buffer plus separate image files, so a finished asset is a folder rather than a single file.
What it carries: The same scene data as GLB — PBR materials, image textures, node hierarchy, skinning, morph targets, keyframe animation, cameras and lights — but expressed as external file references instead of an embedded payload.

STL.stl
STL (Stereolithography)
STL is an additive-manufacturing format from the 1990s: a flat list of triangles and nothing else. It has no concept of a scene, a material or a texture, which is why it is the lingua franca of 3D printing and also its most lossy interchange format.
What it carries: Triangle positions and, optionally, one facet normal per triangle. No UVs, no vertex colours, no materials, no node hierarchy, no animation.

STL keeps only what a 3D printer cares about: a closed set of triangles. Everything else in the glTF asset — materials, textures, hierarchy, animation — is deliberately discarded.
Why convert glTF to STL
- Send the shape to a slicer for FDM or resin printing.
- Pass the model to a mesh-repair, decimation or analysis tool that only reads STL.
- Produce a compact, dependency-free shape file for someone without 3D software.
What happens during the conversion
Geometry
The scene is triangulated and written as a binary STL with a facet normal per triangle. Node transforms are baked into the positions and every mesh is merged into one coordinate space.
Materials and textures
None are written. STL has no material, texture, UV or colour field, so a richly textured glTF arrives as an untextured shape that your slicer colours with its own default.
Animation
glTF can carry keyframe animation, skinning and morph targets; STL has no way to store any of them, so a single static pose is written.
Common use cases
- Preparing a printable model from a textured web asset.
- Running mesh analysis or repair in a tool that speaks STL.
- Sharing a shape-only copy with a printer or contractor.
Limitations of this conversion
- All material, texture and colour data is lost — expected for STL.
- No scene graph, cameras, lights, skinning or animation survive.
- STL carries no unit metadata, so confirm millimetres versus centimetres in your slicer.
How to convert glTF to STL
Three steps in the browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so an unwieldy file is limited only by your own device's memory.
Upload the full glTF asset
Zip the .gltf, .bin and images together so the model loads with its materials.
Convert to STL
The scene is triangulated and written as a binary STL with computed normals.
Check scale in your slicer
STL has no unit field — make sure the slicer is reading the right size before printing.
