PLY to STL Converter
Convert a mesh PLY to binary STL for 3D printing. A point-cloud PLY has no faces, so the conversion fails — use PLY to GLB instead. Runs in your browser.

PLY (Polygon File Format)
PLY is a flexible text or binary format that can describe either a polygon mesh or a bare point cloud, depending on whether the file declares a face element alongside its vertices. That dual nature is why PLY appears in both modelling and LiDAR workflows.
What it carries: Per-vertex position, optional normals, optional RGB colours, optional UVs on mesh PLY files, and face indices. Image textures, material graphs and animation are not part of the format.

STL.stl
STL (Stereolithography)
STL is an additive-manufacturing format from the 1990s: a flat list of triangles and nothing else. It has no concept of a scene, a material or a texture, which is why it is the lingua franca of 3D printing and also its most lossy interchange format.
What it carries: Triangle positions and, optionally, one facet normal per triangle. No UVs, no vertex colours, no materials, no node hierarchy, no animation.

The print-format conversion for PLY data. A mesh PLY has its triangles written as a binary STL. A point-cloud PLY cannot be written as STL at all, and the conversion stops with an error rather than producing an empty file.
Why convert PLY to STL
- Send a mesh PLY to a slicer for 3D printing.
- Hand PLY geometry to a mesh-repair or analysis tool that only reads STL.
- Produce a compact, dependency-free geometry file for sharing.
What happens during the conversion
Geometry
Faces are triangulated and written as a binary STL with facet normals. A PLY with no faces is loaded as a point set, and the STL writer only reads triangle meshes, so it finds none and the conversion fails with a zero-triangle error rather than writing a file.
Materials and textures
None. STL has no material, texture, UV or colour field, so any per-vertex colour in the PLY is dropped along with the rest of the appearance data.
Common use cases
- Preparing a mesh PLY for printing.
- Running STL-based mesh repair or analysis on PLY geometry.
- Producing a small, shareable shape file.
Limitations of this conversion
- Only valid for mesh PLY. A point-cloud PLY has no faces, STL cannot store unconnected points, and the conversion stops with an error rather than giving you a broken file.
- Vertex colour and any texture information are lost.
- STL carries no unit metadata, so the .ply's coordinates pass through unchanged and the scale must be set in the slicer.
How to convert PLY to STL
Three steps in the browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so an unwieldy file is limited only by your own device's memory.
Upload your .ply
Check that it is a mesh PLY with faces, not a bare point cloud.
Convert to STL
Faces are triangulated and written as a binary STL with computed normals. A point cloud stops here, with a message that no triangles were found.
Check the mesh in your slicer
Confirm the shape is watertight and set the unit, since the STL carries neither.
