Format Information

Source Format

3MF.3mf

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format)

3MF is the modern replacement for STL, built for 3D printing and industrial additive manufacturing. It is an OPC package — a ZIP container holding XML metadata and mesh parts — which is why it can carry colour and material information that STL cannot.

What it carries: Triangle geometry, per-vertex colour and a base material colour. This converter writes geometry and colour; image textures and the wider 3MF material model are not written, and textures inside an imported 3MF are not read.

Target Format

glTF.gltf

glTF (JSON)

glTF 2.0 in its JSON form. The .gltf file is a readable text document that describes the scene and references an external .bin buffer plus separate image files, so a finished asset is a folder rather than a single file.

What it carries: The same scene data as GLB — PBR materials, image textures, node hierarchy, skinning, morph targets, keyframe animation, cameras and lights — but expressed as external file references instead of an embedded payload.

About this conversion

A 3MF print package written as a glTF 2.0 JSON asset. Geometry and colour carry across, and the result is a readable .gltf plus a .bin buffer that any glTF toolchain can process.

Why convert 3MF to glTF

  • Put a 3MF through glTF Validator or a glTF optimisation pipeline.
  • Store a print asset unpacked so the buffer and geometry can be versioned.
  • Move a 3MF workflow onto glTF without changing the source format.

What happens during the conversion

Geometry

The 3MF model part is written as a glTF mesh with faces triangulated and transforms baked into the positions. Everything ends up in a single node, since 3MF has no scene graph.

Materials and textures

Per-vertex colour from the 3MF becomes a glTF colour attribute, and the base material colour is applied. Texture images inside the 3MF do not reach the output, and UVs only come across when the 3MF assigned its triangles to a texture2D group — a colour-group or base-material 3MF has no UV set to write.

Common use cases

  • Validating and optimising a 3MF asset with glTF tooling.
  • Storing a print asset unpacked for review or versioning.
  • Bridging a print pipeline and a web pipeline.

Limitations of this conversion

  • Texture images inside the 3MF do not reach the .gltf, and UVs are only written if the package used a texture2D group.
  • No material model beyond base colour — 3MF has no PBR metal/roughness data to bring across.
  • Objects hidden in the 3MF scene are not written, because glTF output exports visible objects only.
  • The download is a ZIP; the .gltf and .bin must stay together.
  • The package's unit attribute is read but never used to rescale. The numbers in the .gltf are the numbers that were in the file, and glTF has no unit field to move the label into.

How to convert 3MF to glTF

Three steps in the browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so an unwieldy file is limited only by your own device's memory.

1
STEP 1

Upload your .3mf

The 3MF package is read directly, including its build items, transforms and materials.

2
STEP 2

Convert to glTF

Geometry and colour are written as a .gltf document plus a .bin buffer.

3
STEP 3

Unpack the ZIP and keep the files together

The 3MF's triangles are written into a .gltf JSON document with a separate .bin buffer, linked by relative path.
