3MF to OBJ Converter

Convert a 3MF print package to Wavefront OBJ. Geometry carries over; per-vertex colour does not, since OBJ has no colour field. Runs in your browser.

Format Information

Source Format

3MF.3mf

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format)

3MF is the modern replacement for STL, built for 3D printing and industrial additive manufacturing. It is an OPC package — a ZIP container holding XML metadata and mesh parts — which is why it can carry colour and material information that STL cannot.

What it carries: Triangle geometry, per-vertex colour and a base material colour. This converter writes geometry and colour; image textures and the wider 3MF material model are not written, and textures inside an imported 3MF are not read.

OBJ.obj

OBJ (Wavefront)

The Wavefront OBJ format is a plain-text mesh description that has been the default interchange format for computer graphics since the 1990s. Geometry lives in the .obj file; colour and texture references live in a companion .mtl file.

What it carries: Vertex positions, normals, texture coordinates and polygon faces, plus what MTL can express: a diffuse colour, opacity, shininess and a single diffuse texture map. There are no PBR metal/roughness values, no normal maps, no vertex colours and no animation.

About this conversion

A 3MF print package downgraded to the 1990s mesh format. Geometry is written to .obj, and whatever colour the 3MF carried is reduced to a simple material description.

Why convert 3MF to OBJ

  • Open a 3MF in a tool that reads OBJ but has never heard of 3MF.
  • Extract a simple mesh for an older modelling or rendering pipeline.
  • Produce a text-based mesh for review in version control.

What happens during the conversion

Geometry

The 3MF triangles are written to .obj with faces triangulated and transforms baked into the positions. The 3MF's part structure is flattened into a single object list, because OBJ has no scene graph.

Materials and textures

Colour is the only appearance data 3MF offers here, and OBJ has no vertex-colour field. The base material colour becomes the .mtl diffuse colour, and the texture image inside the 3MF is not written to the .obj.

Common use cases

  • Compatibility with older tools that predate 3MF.
  • Extracting a plain mesh for a legacy renderer.
  • Producing a reviewable text mesh from a print asset.

Limitations of this conversion

  • Vertex colours are not written — OBJ has no standard field for them — so a coloured 3MF arrives monochrome.
  • Texture images inside the 3MF do not reach the .obj, and UVs are only written if the package assigned its triangles to a texture2D group; a colour-group or base-material 3MF has no UV set to carry.
  • OBJ has no scene graph, so the 3MF part structure is flattened away.
  • The package's unit attribute is read but never used to rescale, and an .obj has no unit field, so the numbers arrive unchanged and the scale has to be set by hand.

How to convert 3MF to OBJ

Three steps in the browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so an unwieldy file is limited only by your own device's memory.

1
STEP 1

Upload your .3mf

The 3MF package is read directly, and any textures inside it are ignored because the .obj writer takes geometry and material colour only.

2
STEP 2

Convert to OBJ

Geometry is written to .obj, with the base material colour as an .mtl entry.

3
STEP 3

Open the .obj in your tool

Expect flat colour, since OBJ cannot store per-vertex colour.
