Format Information

Source Format

OBJ.obj

OBJ (Wavefront)

The Wavefront OBJ format is a plain-text mesh description that has been the default interchange format for computer graphics since the 1990s. Geometry lives in the .obj file; colour and texture references live in a companion .mtl file.

What it carries: Vertex positions, normals, texture coordinates and polygon faces, plus what MTL can express: a diffuse colour, opacity, shininess and a single diffuse texture map. There are no PBR metal/roughness values, no normal maps, no vertex colours and no animation.

3MF.3mf

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format)

3MF is the modern replacement for STL, built for 3D printing and industrial additive manufacturing. It is an OPC package — a ZIP container holding XML metadata and mesh parts — which is why it can carry colour and material information that STL cannot.

What it carries: Triangle geometry, per-vertex colour and a base material colour. This converter writes geometry and colour; image textures and the wider 3MF material model are not written, and textures inside an imported 3MF are not read.

About this conversion

The upgrade path for printing. An OBJ mesh is triangulated and written into a 3MF package, which is STL's successor and can carry colour information STL cannot.

Why convert OBJ to 3MF

  • Move a print workflow from STL to 3MF so colour is available on the output.
  • Produce a modern OPC package for slicers and print-farm tools that have moved off STL.
  • Keep the print file in a format that can express a material model.

What happens during the conversion

Geometry

The OBJ is triangulated into a single indexed mesh and written into the 3MF model part, with transforms baked in. The generated package is reloaded and checked before download.

Materials and textures

Colour is what 3MF adds here. Per-vertex colours are written when present, and otherwise the first material's base colour is used. The OBJ's diffuse texture is not rasterised into the 3MF.

Common use cases

  • Sending an OBJ with real materials to a printer that mixes filament colours.
  • Migrating an STL-based print workflow onto 3MF.
  • Sending a colour-bearing asset to a modern slicer.

Limitations of this conversion

  • Image textures and UVs are not written, so a textured OBJ becomes flat-coloured geometry.
  • Normals are not written, so the slicer derives shading from the triangles itself.
  • OBJ has no animation, so the 3MF will be a static mesh.

How to convert OBJ to 3MF

Three steps in the browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so an unwieldy file is limited only by your own device's memory.

1
STEP 1

Upload your .obj

Geometry is all that is needed; the .mtl will not carry over.

2
STEP 2

Convert to 3MF

The mesh is triangulated and written into a validated 3MF package with colour.

3
STEP 3

Preview in your slicer

Confirm colour and orientation before you print.
