How to Capture a 3D Model Screenshot Online

You can capture a 3D model screenshot online in your browser with GLBKit. Open the viewer, upload your model, frame it, and export the result as a PNG or JPEG image — no desktop software, plugins, or rendering pipeline needed.

How do I capture a screenshot of a 3D model online?

What is a 3D model screenshot?

A 3D model screenshot is a still image captured from a real-time 3D scene. Unlike a 2D image of a 3D model that was rendered offline in a DCC tool, a screenshot is generated from the live WebGL canvas at the moment you click capture.

That means the screenshot reflects:

  • the current camera angle, zoom and framing
  • the current lighting and background
  • the current render style (solid or wireframe)
  • the export resolution you choose

GLBKit captures only the 3D canvas itself — the surrounding sidebar, toolbars and any other page UI are not included in the exported image.

Why capture a 3D model screenshot?

Screenshots of 3D models are useful whenever you need a still image of a model that lives in 3D. Common cases:

Which 3D formats can GLBKit capture?

GLBKit’s capture pipeline runs against the WebGL canvas, so any format that the viewer can load can also be screenshotted. This includes the binary and text-based glTF formats, common mesh exchange formats, and a few point-cloud and CAD formats.

The GLBKit screenshot workflow

Capturing a screenshot in GLBKit follows a single, repeatable flow regardless of which viewer you start from. The screenshot itself is always produced by the same Screenshot panel.

1. Open

Open a GLBKit viewer or the dedicated screenshot tool.

2. Upload

Drop a model onto the canvas or use the upload control.

3. Frame

Rotate, zoom and pan the model into position.

4. Capture

Open the Screenshot tab, choose format and resolution, then download.

Step 1 — Open the GLBKit viewer

Start in a viewer that matches the format you want to capture. GLBKit has dedicated viewers for the most common formats, and a general viewer that handles everything else.

If you only plan to capture the model and don’t need other viewer features, you can also start directly in the dedicated 3D model screenshot tool, which loads the viewer pre-configured with the Screenshot panel open.

Step 2 — Upload your 3D model

Drop your file onto the canvas, click the canvas to open the file picker, or use the upload button in the top-right toolbar. GLBKit accepts a single supported file, or a ZIP package that contains a supported file.

Once a file is selected, the viewer clears any previous model state and begins loading the new one. A loading indicator overlays the viewport until the model is ready.

If the file format is not supported, GLBKit shows a clear error message and stops the upload. If the file is valid but fails to parse, the error overlay names the specific parsing failure so you can fix it in the source tool and re-upload.

Step 3 — Wait for the model to load

GLBKit parses the model in the background. Once the mesh and any embedded textures are ready, the canvas renders the scene and the viewport controls become active.

When the model is ready, the Screenshot panel automatically captures a first preview using PNG at 1920 × 1080 on a white background so you have a reference image while you keep adjusting the camera.

Step 4 — Frame the model

Use the viewport controls to position the model exactly how you want it in the final image:

  • Orbit and pan — left-drag to rotate, right-drag or PAN mode to move the camera.
  • Zoom — scroll wheel, pinch gesture, or the ZOOM controls in the bottom bar.
  • Recenter — the reset button in the top-right toolbar resets the camera to its default framing.
  • Auto-rotate — the ANIMATION button slowly spins the model so you can review it from every side.

Whatever you see framed on the canvas at the moment of capture is what the screenshot will contain.

Step 5 — Choose a camera view

If you want a precise, repeatable angle instead of free-orbit framing, switch the camera to one of the built-in view presets:

  • Isometric — the default, angled overview
  • Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, Bottom — orthographic-style fixed angles

You can still zoom and pan within a preset view, so the preset defines the angle and not the framing.

Step 6 — Set the background

Before capturing, pick the background you want in the final image. GLBKit supports three options:

  • Transparent — exports the model against a transparent canvas. Choose PNG for this option so the transparency is preserved.
  • White — solid white background. A safe default for product and marketplace listings.
  • Black — solid black background. Useful for dramatic or silhouette-style renders.

These options apply to the captured image only. The viewport itself keeps its dark theme background so the model stays visible while you work.

Step 7 — Open the Screenshot panel

Once the model is framed and the background is set, open the Screenshot panel. In the dedicated screenshot tool, this panel is already open. In the general 3D model viewer, switch to the Screenshot tab in the right-hand sidebar to reveal it.

The panel shows a live preview area and three capture settings: image format, resolution and background.

Step 8 — Choose format and resolution

Two image formats are supported:

  • PNG — lossless, supports transparent backgrounds, ideal for compositing the model onto another image.
  • JPEG — smaller file size, good for sharing and previews where transparency is not required.

Three resolutions are supported:

  • 1280 × 720 (HD)
  • 1920 × 1080 (Full HD)
  • 3840 × 2160 (4K)

Pick the lowest resolution you actually need — screenshots are exported at the chosen dimensions, and 4K images take noticeably longer to render and download.

Step 9 — Capture and download

Click the Capture button to render the screenshot at the current camera, background and resolution. The panel then shows the captured image in its preview area.

Click Download to save the image to your device. The filename follows the pattern model-name-resolution.format — for example chair-1080p.png or prop-4k.jpeg.

If the preview doesn’t match what you expected, change any of the settings, recapture, and download again — each capture is independent.

Best practices for better 3D model screenshots

A few small habits make screenshots look noticeably cleaner without changing any tooling.

  • Frame the model with a small margin — leave a little breathing room around the model instead of cropping it edge-to-edge.
  • Use a useful camera angle — the isometric view works well for most architectural and product models, while a front or 3/4 view is better for character-style assets.
  • Match the background to the destination — transparent for compositing, white for marketplaces, black for mood or silhouette shots.
  • Choose the lowest resolution you need — use HD for previews, Full HD for general use, and 4K only when you need a high-detail hero image.
  • Hide unnecessary overlay helpers — the grid and gizmos are turned off automatically during capture, but keep them off in the viewport while framing so you can see the final result.

Troubleshooting common screenshot issues

A few situations come up regularly when capturing a 3D model screenshot. The fixes below cover the ones that are actually supported by GLBKit.

The model does not load

Check that the file extension is in the supported list (GLB, GLTF, OBJ, STL, PLY, PCD, FBX, USD, 3MF, DAE, X3D, VRM, OFF, VRML, LAS, LAZ, STEP, or a ZIP containing one of these). For GLTF projects, also make sure the referenced buffers and textures are reachable — packaging the project as a ZIP is the most reliable way to do this. If the file parses but renders incorrectly, the error overlay names the underlying parsing failure.

The Screenshot tab is not visible

The Screenshot panel only renders a preview once a model is loaded. Upload a model first, then switch to the Screenshot tab in the sidebar.

The screenshot does not look like the viewer

The screenshot captures the 3D canvas only — the sidebar, toolbars and other UI are not included. If the framing, background or resolution does not match what you expect, change the corresponding setting in the Screenshot panel and capture again. Each capture is independent.

The model is too small or too large in the frame

Use zoom (scroll wheel, pinch, or the ZOOM controls) to bring the model closer or push it further away. You can also use the Recenter button in the top-right toolbar to reset the camera and start over.

The background looks different than expected

The viewport uses a dark theme background while you work, but the screenshot uses the background you select in the Screenshot panel (transparent, white, or black). Make sure the selected option in the panel matches what you want in the final image.

Transparent background is not being preserved

Transparent backgrounds require the PNG format. If you export as JPEG, transparency is lost by design. Switch the format to PNG in the Screenshot panel and capture again.

The downloaded file has a confusing name

GLBKit names the file using the model name, the chosen resolution, and the chosen format — for example chair-1080p.png. The model name comes from the file you uploaded, so renaming the source file before upload is the easiest way to control it.

When to use different screenshot settings

GLBKit offers three resolutions and two formats. The right combination depends on where the screenshot will be used.
